New Year's Eve sees a record-breaking number of people submit their tax returns

HM Revenue and Customs (HMRC) has revealed that a record-breaking total of 24,546 people submitted their self assessment tax returns on New Year’s Eve.

This latest figure equates to a 2.8% rise when compared to the same time last year.

Meanwhile, 11,467 people submitted their self assessment tax return on New Year’s Day.

Figures show that over 600 people completed their tax return between the hours of midnight and 10am on the first day of 2016.

Furthermore, the data also reveals that 2,044 people finalised their tax return on Christmas Day, whilst an additional 5,402 people chose to complete their tax return online on Boxing Day, rather than visiting the festive sales.

Ruth Owen, director-general of personal tax at HMRC, stated: ‘Our advice is don’t leave it until it’s too late. Make sure you give yourself plenty of time and remember our online service is available with helpful advice and handy tips any time of the year’.

The deadline for the online submission of 2014/15 tax returns to HMRC and for the payment of any tax owed is 31 January 2016.
